How Common is Stachybotrys Mold in Homes?

Stachybotrys mold is less common than other types of mold found in homes. A study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found something important. About 1 in 10 homes in the United States might have mold. However, not all of these homes have Stachybotrys mold.

The presence of Stachybotrys mold depends on several factors. These include climate, the age of the building, and moisture. In places with high humidity or frequent rain, Stachybotrys mold is more likely to be found. This is because these conditions are favorable for mold growth. Older buildings with inadequate ventilation or poorly maintained structures may be more susceptible to mold growth, including Stachybotrys.

Homeowners should be vigilant for signs of mold, particularly Stachybotrys, and take proactive steps to prevent or resolve any mold problems in their homes. Regularly checking for water damage or leaks, ensuring proper ventilation, and tackling moisture problems can significantly reduce the risk of Stachybotrys mold growth.

Health Risks Associated with Stachybotry Mold

Being around Stachybotrys mold can cause health problems. This is especially true for people with allergies, weakened immune systems, or breathing issues. Common symptoms include sneezing, coughing, congestion, eye irritation, and skin rashes. Prolonged exposure may result in more severe respiratory issues, neurological problems, and chronic health conditions. It is essential to address mold issues promptly to minimize the risk of adverse health effects.

Regularly inspecting your home for signs of mold growth, water damage, and moisture intrusion is crucial in preventing Stachybotrys mold. Keep an eye out for visible mold, musty odors, and water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors. Proper ventilation, dehumidification, and prompt repair of leaks or water damage can help maintain a mold-free environment.

If you suspect you have mold in your home, SCCS NWI can test for it. We do both surface testing on areas that show visual evidence of mold growth in a certain area, or air quality testing to detect mold that has become airborne.. This testing will provide definitive answers as to if there is a mold problem. If mold is discovered the test will identify exactly what type of mold is present.

           Understanding Water Damage

Water damage refers to the damage that can occur when water infiltrates areas where it should not be. Water can compromise building materials or systems within the home. Water damage can result from a range of events, including heavy rainfall, burst pipes, or appliance malfunctions.

The severity of water damage can vary greatly. It can range from minor issues like a small leak to major problems like a flooded basement. The type of water involved, clean, gray, or black, also affects the damage level and the remediation process.

Immediate action is crucial when dealing with water damage. The longer water sits, the more damage it can cause. This includes structural damage to your property and potential mold growth.

Understanding the extent and type of water damage is the first step in deciding between a DIY or professional solution. It's important to assess the situation accurately to choose the most effective remediation method.

Remember, safety should always be your top priority when dealing with water damage.

           The DIY Water Damage Solution

DIY water damage solutions can be a viable option for minor water damage incidents. This approach involves homeowners taking on the task of water removal and clean up themselves.

To perform DIY water damage cleanup, you'll need certain tools and equipment. These include a wet/dry vacuum, fans, dehumidifiers, and gloves.

The process begins with water removal. This involves using a wet/dry vacuum to extract as much water as possible from the affected area. Next, you'll need to dry out the area. This can be done using fans and dehumidifiers to circulate air and remove moisture.

Finally, you'll need to clean and sanitize the area. This step is crucial to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

Pros of DIY Water Damage Clean Up

One of the main advantages of DIY water damage clean up is the potential for cost savings. By doing the work yourself, you can avoid the cost of professional services.

Another benefit is the immediate response. You can start the clean-up process as soon as you notice the water damage.

DIY solutions also allow for greater control over the process. You can decide what to salvage and what to discard based on your personal judgment.

Moreover, DIY water damage clean up can be a learning experience. It can provide valuable knowledge for handling future incidents.

Lastly, DIY solutions can be satisfying. There's a sense of accomplishment in successfully restoring your own property.

Cons of DIY Water Damage Clean Up

However, DIY solutions come with their own set of challenges. One of the main drawbacks is the time and effort required. Water damage cleanup can be a labor-intensive process.

There's also the risk of incomplete drying. Without professional equipment, it can be difficult to fully dry out the affected area. This can lead to mold growth and further damage.

DIY solutions also carry the risk of personal injury. Water damage scenarios can present various hazards, including electrical risks and exposure to harmful substances.

Another downside is the potential for further damage. Without proper training and experience, you might inadvertently cause more harm to your property.

Finally, DIY solutions may not be effective for severe water damage. In such cases, professional intervention is often necessary.

           The Professional Water Damage Solution

Professional water damage solutions involve hiring an IICRC certified restoration company to handle the water damage remediation. These companies have trained technicians, advanced equipment, and extensive experience in dealing with water damage scenarios.

The process of professional water damage remediation starts with a professional assessment. This involves identifying the source of the water damage, the type of water involved, and the extent of the damage.

Next, the water removal process begins. Professionals use powerful equipment to extract large amounts of water quickly.

After water removal, the drying and dehumidification process starts. This involves using industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to remove any remaining moisture.

Then, the cleaning and sanitizing phase takes place. Professionals use specialized cleaning products and methods to clean and sanitize the area.

Finally, the restoration phase begins. This involves repairing and restoring the property to its pre-water damage condition.

Pros of Professional Water Damage Remediation

One of the main advantages of professional water damage remediation is the expertise and experience professionals bring. They have the training and knowledge to handle all types of water damage scenarios.

Another benefit is the use of advanced equipment. Professionals have access to industrial-grade tools and technology that can ensure thorough water removal and drying.

Professional services also offer quick response times. Many companies offer 24/7 emergency services, allowing them to start the remediation process as soon as possible.

Professional water damage remediation companies can often help with insurance claims. They can provide the necessary documentation and evidence to support your claim.

Lastly, professional services can provide peace of mind. Knowing that experts are handling the situation can reduce stress and anxiety.

Cons of Professional Water Damage Remediation

However, professional services also have their drawbacks. One of the main disadvantages is the cost. Professional water damage remediation can be expensive, especially for extensive damage.

Another downside is the potential for disruption. The remediation process can be intrusive and may require you to vacate your property for a period of time.

There's also the risk of dealing with unscrupulous companies. It's important to do your research and choose a reputable company.

While professionals can help with insurance claims, not all damages may be covered. You may still have to bear some out-of-pocket costs.

Recognizing when to call a professional for water damage remediation is crucial.

If the water damage is extensive, affecting large areas or multiple rooms, it's best to call a professional.

If the water damage is caused by contaminated water, such as sewage or floodwater, professional help is necessary.

Cost Comparison: DIY vs. Professional Solutions

The cost of DIY water damage solutions can be lower, especially for minor incidents. You'll primarily spend on tools, equipment, and your time.

However, for extensive damage, professional services may be more cost-effective. They have the right tools and expertise to handle large-scale damage efficiently.

Remember, improper DIY can lead to further damage, increasing the overall cost. It's essential to weigh the costs and benefits before deciding on a solution.

DIY solutions can be effective for minor water damage. However, if not done correctly, they may lead to long-term issues like mold growth and structural damage.

Professional solutions, on the other hand, ensure thorough remediation. This can prevent future problems and maintain the value of your property.

Water damage is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. The choice between DIY and professional solutions depends on the severity of the damage.

For minor incidents, a DIY approach can be cost-effective and efficient. However, for major water damage, professional remediation by a reliable IICRC-certified water damage remediation company is the safest and most effective option.

           What is Water Damage Restoration?

Before we dive into the importance of quick water restoration, let's first define what it is. Water damage restoration is the process of restoring a property back to its pre-loss condition after it has been affected by water damage. This process involves removing excess water, drying out the affected areas, and repairing any damage caused by the water.

The Dangers of Delaying Water Restoration

When it comes to water damage, time is of the essence. The longer you wait to address the issue, the more damage it can cause. Here are some of the dangers of delaying water restoration:

Structural Damage: Water can weaken the structure of your home, causing walls, floors, and ceilings to warp, crack, or even collapse. This can lead to costly repairs and put your family's safety at risk.

Mold Growth: Mold thrives in damp environments, and it only takes 24-48 hours for it to start growing. If water damage is not addressed quickly, mold can spread throughout your home, causing health issues and further damage.

Electrical Hazards: Water can damage electrical systems and appliances, creating a fire hazard. It's crucial to turn off the power to your home if you suspect water damage to prevent any accidents.

Health Risks: Standing water can become contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances. This can pose a significant health risk to you and your family, especially if you have young children or elderly family members.

The Benefits of Quick Water Restoration

Now that we've discussed the dangers of delaying water restoration, let's explore the benefits of acting quickly.

Prevents Further Damage: The longer water sits in your home, the more damage it can cause. By addressing the issue promptly, you can prevent further damage and save yourself from costly repairs.

Saves Time and Money: Quick water restoration can save you time and money in the long run. The longer you wait, the more extensive the damage becomes, and the more expensive the restoration process will be.

Protects Your Belongings: Water damage can ruin your furniture, electronics, and other belongings. By acting quickly, you can salvage more of your possessions and minimize your losses.

Prevents Mold Growth: As mentioned earlier, mold can start growing in as little as 24 hours. By addressing water damage quickly, you can prevent mold growth and the health risks associated with it.

           The Water Damage Restoration Process

The water damage restoration process involves several steps, including:

Inspection: The first step is to assess the extent of the damage and identify the source of the water.

Water Removal: The next step is to remove any standing water from your home using specialized equipment.

Drying and Dehumidification: Once the water is removed, the affected areas need to be thoroughly dried and dehumidified to prevent mold growth.

Cleaning and Sanitizing: After the area is dry, the restoration team will clean and sanitize the affected areas to remove any bacteria or contaminants.

Repairs and Restoration: The final step is to repair any damage caused by the water and restore your home to its pre-loss condition.

Do I need a professional mold removal company to deal with mold in my home or business?

A professional mold company will handle mold remediation safely and effectively.

The decision to hire a professional mold removal company depends on the extent of the mold problem and your ability to handle it safely and effectively. Here are some factors to consider:

Size and Severity of Mold Infestation:

Small, isolated areas of mold (typically less than 10 square feet) can often be handled by homeowners using appropriate cleaning products and protective gear.

Larger or widespread mold infestations, especially those covering more than 10 square feet, may require professional intervention.

            Health Concerns:

If you or your family members have allergies, respiratory issues, or other health concerns, it's advisable to consult with a professional mold removal company to ensure proper containment and removal without putting your health at risk.

            Hidden Mold:

Mold can grow in hidden or hard-to-reach areas, such as behind walls or under flooring. Professionals have the expertise and equipment to detect and address hidden mold problems.

            Structural Damage:

When a frozen pipe bursts water can be sprayed into areas it doesn't belong. If not properly dealt with the moist area can lead to water damage and mold growth.

Tips to prevent frozen pipes and how to deal with them if they occur

           Preventing Frozen Pipes:

            Insulate Pipes

: Insulate pipes, especially those exposed to colder temperatures, using pipe insulation or heating tape. This can help maintain higher temperatures and prevent freezing.

            Keep Interior Temperature Consistent:

Maintain a consistent temperature inside your home, especially during extremely cold weather. This helps prevent pipes in vulnerable areas, like attics and basements, from freezing.

            Open Cabinet Doors:

Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks by opening cabinet doors. This can be particularly helpful for pipes located along exterior walls.

            Drip Faucets:

During extremely cold weather, allow faucets to drip slightly. The movement of water can prevent freezing.

            Seal Leaks:

Inspect and seal any gaps or cracks in walls, floors, and ceilings, as these can allow cold air to reach pipes.

            Disconnect Hoses:

Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, and shut off water supply to outdoor faucets.

            Keep Heat On When Away:

If you plan to be away during cold weather, keep the heat on in your home or set it to a temperature that prevents freezing.

What to Do When a Frozen Pipe Bursts:

            Shut Off Water Supply

: Locate and shut off the main water valve immediately. This minimizes water damage and pressure on the affected pipe.

            Turn Off Electricity:

If the burst pipe is near electrical appliances or outlets, turn off the electricity in that area to avoid electrical hazards.

            Call a Plumber:

Contact a reliable plumber, preferably one with 24-hour emergency services, to assess and repair the burst pipe.

           Understanding Why Pipes Burst:

           Expansion of Water

: Water expands when it freezes, creating pressure within pipes.

           Increased Pressure:

As ice forms inside a pipe, it creates a blockage, leading to an increase in water pressure upstream.

           Pipe Weakening:

The pressure created by the frozen blockage can weaken the pipe structure, leading to bursts in vulnerable areas.

           Thawing and Water Release:

When the temperature rises, the ice thaws, and the water trapped behind the ice blockage is released with force, causing the pipe to burst.

           Repeated Freezing and Thawing:

Pipes subjected to repeated freezing and thawing are at a higher risk of bursting due to the cumulative stress on the pipe walls.

Can mold in my home make my family sick?

Mold can make your family sick, but it often affects people differently. Much like a food allergy, some people are more susceptible to the affects of mold than others.

           Mold affects everyone differently

One of the most common questions I get when I look in a mold report is:A- Are we going to be sick? And B-How are we going to be impacted?

It's really hard to determine on an individual basis how each individual is going to be impacted by the mold.

To understand this, let me tell you my experience. I got started in this business in 2012 because my son was impacted negatively by some mold that was in our house. He had respiratory issues, had to have nebulizer treatments and take steroids to help him breathe. At the time we didn't know there was mold on the interior wall of our attic adjacent to our son’s bedroom. My other son, who was 7 at the time, had no symptoms of mold exposure even though he was living in the same room.

Given my personal experience I have witnessed how hard it is to determine A -who's going to be impacted and B- how severely the impact will be.

Just like people with seasonal allergies, each person’s immune systems are very different. It's hard to determine how mold exposure will affect an individual.

Air Quality Testing Can Measure Mold Levels in Your Home

Air Quality Testing can test for mold in the air within your home. We will compare the mold that is naturally occurring outside of your home and compare that with what is found inside of your home to determine if there is a higher concentration of mold inside your home that needs to be dealt with.

Air Quality Testing can detect mold even if it cannot be seen.

One type of mold test we offer is air quality testing. Air quality testing could be in order in a situation where someone's getting sick in the house and they're not sure why and they want to eliminate maybe the possibility of mold that may be present, but is either invisible to the naked eye, or in a place where it cannot be easily seen.

We start by determining how much mold is in the air that we breathe in while in your home. We take a 5 minutes sample of the air circulating in the room and I send this off to a lab.

We also take a test to determine the mold levels outside of the home. We do this to determine a baseline to determine what is naturally in the environment so that we can compare the amount of mold found on the inside to naturally occurring mold in the outside air. No matter what you're going to have some level of mold in your home no matter what your house was just built, or if it is an older home. Mold occurs naturally in the outside air so it has a chance to enter our homes when we are opening and closing doors or windows.

Once we have the indoor and outdoor air samples we compare the two. For example, if we find penicillium aspergillus in the outside air, we want to know at what level that particular mold is found in the inside.

If we start seeing that the levels of mold in the house are exceeding what is outside the house then we know we have some type of problem and further investigation needs to be determined to find the source of the mold if there is no visible evidence of mold prior to the air quality testing

Testing Surface for Mold

If you suspect mold is growing on a particular surface we can test that surface and send the sample to an independent lab that tests for mold spores.

Let’s talk a little bit about mold testing...

People often ask me what can you do in my house to test if I have mold?

There are two different types of mold testing - strip testing and air testing. In this post we’ll be talking about using a strip test to detect mold. Our video about Mold Testing shows our tech Brian going down in the crawl space of a homeowner that suspects they may have some possible growth. We test the area so we can answer the questions: Is it mold? Is it just discoloration of the wood over time? Maybe a little bit of water damage?

We conduct mold testing to determine is A. - Is it Mold? And B - if it is mold, what type of mold is it? When there is a specific area to test we use the strip testing method where the strip has a sticky side that we place that sticky side directly on the area we suspect to have mold so that we have a chance to pick up any mold spores. We document the testing location with a picture to make so we can match up the area tested to the final test result. We then ship the strip test off to a mold testing facility in Illinois, which isn't too far from here in Valparaiso. We ship the test off using overnight shipping. The lab will send us back our results in a report that tells us what type of mold it is as well as how much there is. It can be a debris level from 1 to 5.

A debris level of 1 tells us there is a little bit of mold present while a debris level of 5 indicates there's a lot of mold spores present.

Knowing the type of mold and the amount of spores present allows us to develop the most effective protocol for mold mitigation.
